In October of 2009 we delivered the model of Kalevala to the owner’s home in Pebble Beach California. This yacht is a custom built Swan 60 with an extended transom (now measuring 65’ in length). The owner closely involved in the yacht's building process in 2002 has since sailed her around the world. Kalevala is a sloop and we built the model of her at 7/16" scale. The model measures about 28 inches long by 43" tall with a beam of 7-5/8".

We enlisted the use of some exciting new and available technologies with this model. The main boom and mirrored dual steering pedestals were drawn in 3D CAD and milled out of a synthetic tooling board at a local CNC 3D milling company. You can see examples of 3-D work including Kalevala winches, a small dinghy of my design and parts for 98’ ketch Windcrest at the following links;

Additionally, 3-D drawings of hardware such as winches, cleats, fairleads, and blocks were created in a liquid polymer solution using a method called stereo-lithography. The parts were grown over night to be cast and finished in gold. The detail and accuracy is amazing and fabrication time is accelerated. You can see some of this detail in a 4.5 minute promotional video produced by Gary Jobson.
